SyllabusCI6400 - Information Technology for Strategic Advantage - 4.5 quarter credits Course Description: This course focuses on the meaning and role of information technology within a business setting and offers a broad perspective of the relationship between organizational goals, information technology and strategic advantage. The student will examine the design and implementation of various information systems in order to integrate current technologies and configurations into the management decision-making and evaluation process. Prerequisite: Computer proficiency Objectives of the Course: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe how and why information systems are essential to business. 2. Evaluate information systems and their role in organizations. 3. Describe how information systems can give businesses a competitive advantage. 4. Apply the basic tools for evaluating packaged software applications. 5. Describe the principles of communication within a computer system and among computers. 6. Demonstrate how database management systems are used and how databases are changing business. 7. Describe the main functions and information needs at different managerial levels. 8. Describe how information technology is used in the most common business functions to make business processes more effective and more efficient. 9.
