Assignments

Most weeks you will be asked to turn in four writing assignments: one company profile, one short biography, and two article summaries. Each of these should be about 200 words long, and each will be worth 10 points. The companies that you can choose for your profiles, and the people that you can choose for your biographies, are listed on the website. You will find the Internet in general, and Wikipedia in particular, to be wonderful tools for your research into these people and companies. I encourage you to think and write about the broad impacts of their work on the world of information technology, rather than constraining yourself to a laundry list of dates and events. The assigned articles should all be available through ProQuest, and you should be able to access them via hyperlinks on the class website. If you don’t know how to use ProQuest, or have trouble finding an article, please let me know.

You will also need to write two more papers and turn them in by the last class period. Each of these papers should be a minimum of 2,000 words, and each will be worth 100 points. The first paper is a summary of the introduction and one chapter from a book relating to the course material that you choose to read (with your instructor’s approval). I have posted a list of suggested books on the website. The second paper is a strategy paper that a business could use to guide them in the strategic management of information technology.

By the end of the quarter you’ll have turned in 18 article summaries, 10 company profiles, 10 biographies, a book summary, and an information technology strategy paper. You are actually writing your own textbook for this class, that I hope will be a useful reference in your future endeavors. So you will have the opportunity to earn up to 580 points from written assignments. These, combined with your classroom participation, will be the basis for your grade.
